Three Score Years and Ten
The official history of the Penzance County School/Humphry Davy Grammar School, 1910-1980 was written by the late Ben Batten and Lawrence James, two former members of staff, shortly before the school closed as a grammar school and became the Humphry Davy (Comprehensive) School. The first edition sold out and it was in 1996 that Martin Orchard, the then secretary of the Old Boys Association, recorded in the first edition of the New Penwithian newsletter that many old boys had expressed a desire to own a copy of “Three Score Years and Ten”. It took the newly formed Old Penwithians Association over 6 years to raise the necessary capital to fund a reprint.
In the second edition we tried to correct errors and omissions, such as names missing from photographs and spelling errors; especially in the list of names in the appendices at the back of the book. We also added some new photographs and an extra chapter at the end to bring the book up to date.
Copies of the book cost £7.50 including p&p. Order from: Mr. P. Tyreman, Treasurer OPA, 10 Treassowe Road, Penzance, Cornwall, TR18 2AU – cheque payable to Old Penwithians Association or order by phone or e-mail and request bank details for electronic payment [see the “Contact Us” page].
